In an interview with RBC newspaper Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei spoke about the possible agenda of the meeting between presidents Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin which is scheduled for the second half of February, BelTA informs.
“The work is in progress, both sides are preparing corresponding materials for this meeting. And I think that it will be very important given the fact that the prime ministers also met many times, and we have made progress in the resolution of a number of issues of the trade and economic cooperation which are important for the two sides. Therefore, the meeting will take place,” the minister said. “Besides, I believe that the recent events which are taking place in and around our countries can and definitely will intensify our integration processes in the bilateral format and, sooner or later, in the multilateral format in the Eurasian Economic Union. Therefore, I think that our presidents need to discuss a couple of things. I believe that the sides will reach serious long-term agreements.”
Vladimir Makei also remarked that the issues of integration in the Union State had not been frozen in the past months. “We have been discussing closer integration cooperation all the time. Heads of specified ministries met with each other regularly. There were mutual visits,” he said.
According to the minister of foreign affairs, Russia's Vice Premier Yuri Borisov visited Belarus not long ago. And the meeting with the prime minister resulted in important agreements in manufacturing cooperation. “Therefore, the dialogue on integration has not stopped. Routine work was done,” Vladimir Makei emphasized.
In his words, there are concrete issues allowing us to say that there is certain progress in these integration processes. And the presidents will get really good material to discuss the future of the Belarusian-Russian relations.
When asked if Minsk's request to allocate money from the loan for the nuclear power plant will be on the agenda of the talks, the minister said: “It is necessary to talk to the Finance Ministry, they are in charge of this area. But I think that the construction of the nuclear power plant is a very important topic and will be discussed. I do not want to discuss the details right now. I cannot say what issues the presidents will discuss.”
He also did not exclude that the interaction in the finance and credit sector will be on the agenda. “But it does not mean that Belarus will definitely ask for Russia's loans or other aid. Perhaps, the sides will discuss the issue of financial and credit cooperation from the perspective of implementing various beneficial joint projects which were, by the way, discussed during the visit of Vice Premier [Yuri] Borisov to Belarus,” Vladimir Makei said.
In this regard, the minister of foreign affairs reminded that Russia's Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin had recently paid a visit to Karelia and had mentioned a joint Belarusian-Russian project to produce vehicles for the forestry industry as a positive example. “This is our enterprise Amkodor. We need to promote such cooperation which will help advance our integration to a brand-new level,” the minister said.

The Belarusian People's Congress has showed that the society is highly interested in preserving the country's system of values and priorities, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the 6th Belarusian People's Congress on 12 February, BelTA has learned.
“The present and the future of Belarus depend on us, and first of all on the delegates present here, for you are the highest elite of our society. We are moving forward, others will follow us, if they want to live in a peaceful and calm country. Everything depends on us,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The delegates of the 6th Belarusian People's Congress approved the basic guidelines of the five-year social and economic development program. The head of state underlined that social focus of the Belarusian economic model remains unchanged. “The forum has showed that the society is highly interested in preserving the country's system of values and priorities. This proves that during the years of independence we have managed to build a system based on the inviolability of the sovereignty of the country. The sovereignty, which is based on traditions, patriotism, and the people's desire for peace,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The president stressed that Belarus, as a sovereign state, remains open for equal and mutually beneficial cooperation with the whole world. At the same time, Belarus invariably seeks an alliance with Russia, Eurasian integration and development of relations with China.
The two-day forum highlighted the future development areas for Belarusian society and necessary changes for more active participation of the population in the country's decision-making. These include the steps to redistribute powers between the branches of power, grant the Belarusian People's Congress with a constitutional status, strengthen local self-governance, and increase the role of public organizations in the political life of the country.
“This is not dogma. Everything that has been said here, including by me, will be analyzed. Life goes on and changes, many points of view may emerge. Perhaps, some issues, as they were outlined at the Belarusian People's Congress, will undergo alterations. I am sure they will. We will by no means be dogmatists and will not cling to this or that opinion (this is particularly true with respect to me). Everything should be democratic taking into account the experience of civilized countries,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Coronavirus vaccines will be distributed in Belarus free of charge, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 6th Belarusian People's Congress in Minsk on 11 February, BelTA has learned.
“I think it is vitally important to vaccinate residents of Belarus free of charge, which we are doing right now,” the head of state said.
The president assured that Belarus will definitely develop its own vaccine, but for now there are agreements on the supply of Russian and Chinese vaccines. Moreover, there is an agreement to manufacture these vaccines in Belarus.
“Our scientists will create a vaccine. This will be done not only for the purpose of protecting people now. A Russian vaccine will be produced in Belarus for this purpose. We have realized that this infection – not necessarily COVID, but some kind of swine, bird flu - will reappear, and we will have to confront it in the future. Therefore, developing a vaccine against COVID today we are creating a groundwork for the future. It will come in handy in this crazy world. You must understand that it costs a lot of money. However, unless we do it today, we will pay ten times more to purchase vaccines from other countries in the future,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
