MFA: No Belarusian casualties reported in Northern Cyprus vessel incident

31.08.2026

The Belarusian embassy in Türkiye has received no information about injured Belarusian citizens following the passenger ship incident off Northern Cyprus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Belarusian diplomats are monitoring the situation within their mandate,” the ministry said.

As BelTA reported previously, at least seven people died when a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus. The causes of the accident will be determined after the black boxes are analyzed.

The ferry, carrying 267 people, capsized 2.5 kilometers off the coast of the town of Girne in Northern Cyprus. A total of 237 people have been rescued, with search operations continuing for another 23. Local authorities reported that contact with the vessel was lost 35 minutes after it left port. The ferry has completely sunk at a depth of 514 meters. Foreign nationals were among the passengers.
