Belarus' KGB concerned about unprecedented pressure, plans to destabilize domestic situation

Tuesday, 09 March 2021

MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) – Belarus is experiencing unprecedented pressure and certain parties intend to destabilize the situation soon, BelTA learned from Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel after the official delivered his report to Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 9 March.

The KGB chief said: “During the report to the head of state the main problems connected with ensuring national security and the threats emerging in the sphere of foreign-policy activities and the domestic situation were outlined. On the whole, we find that the situation in the country is stable.”

Yet the KGB would like to draw attention to several things. “First, unprecedented pressure on our state on the part of foreign partners in relation to the sanction policy and some other things. Second, we are talking about attempts, the report mentioned specific individuals, plans to destabilize the situation soon. I am talking 25-27 March,” Ivan Tertel said.

In his words, the KGB also sees an increase in terrorist threats. “Unfortunately, they originate from the territory of our neighbors, as a rule, the countries Belarus borders on,” Ivan Tertel stated.

“On the whole, the KGB works. The head of state gave a specific instruction to minimize those threats. We will keep working. We are intent on the effective accomplishment of the tasks. According to our estimates, the situation in the country will be stable and law enforcement agencies have sufficient resources to respond to various threats,” Ivan Tertel assured.

Asked about the KGB's evaluation of the situation in the country and its dynamics, Ivan Tertel said: “It is obvious – our foreign partners underline it officially and unofficially, the diplomatic corps underlines it – that the acute period in the development of the situation we saw in H2 2020 is over. The situation is stable.”

Yet Ivan Tertel stated that so-called foreign disruptive centers and the intelligence agencies that oversee them, interested political circles are making attempts to revive the protest activities and destabilize the situation in Belarus in the spring period. “The plans have been mentioned for the last few months. We are ready for it and will take every measure in order to make the persons and organizations, who undertake such attempts, face responsibility in line with the legislation,” the KGB chief said.

Ivan Tertel confirmed Aleksandr Lukashenko's previously mentioned information about the capture of a group of persons and the seizure of their weapons and ammunition. “A large amount of weapons, ammunition, means to remotely detonate explosive substances has been seized. Those are rather well-trained professionals,” Ivan Tertel said.
