Lukashenko wants Gomel Oblast to emulate Grodno’s success

08.07.2026

Gomel Oblast should be modeled on Grodno Oblast, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed Yuri Valevaty, new Aide to the President – Inspector for Gomel Oblast, BelTA has learned.

Until now, Yuri Valevaty held the post of First Deputy Chairman of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

"I want Gomel Oblast to be on par with Grodno Oblast. That is the essence of your appointment to this role,” the head of state noted. “Gomel Oblast should be, if not on par with Grodno (which is very difficult given the conditions in which Gomel Oblast finds itself, and the quality of soil), then at least come close to it. I think this tandem with Ivan Krupko [Chairman of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee] will yield results. I am counting on you greatly.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko also noted that the position of aide to the president in one or another region is, in a certain sense, a temporary intermediate post. “You have certain career prospects ahead of you. I cannot say whether they are big or small, but they are definitely there. You know that after their successful work, we gladly promote aides to other positions. So Mr Valevaty, I want to see how you will work independently and how effectively, in tandem with Ivan Krupko, a former minister agriculture and food minister (though there is no such thing as a former minister), with whom you have a good rapport, you will propel Gomel Oblast forward,” the president said.
